Training to Become A CASA

To become a certified CASA you must complete 30 hours of pre-service training.  We offer training multiple times a year. Pre-service training is held for eight weeks, with a three-hour class every week. There is also a volunteer application you must complete, as well as background checks, reference checks, and an interview with CASA staff.  Throughout the training, we will cover the topics of child welfare, poverty, domestic violence, trauma, substance abuse, the court system, and a variety of other topics that you will encounter in your role as a CASA.  Our goal with training is to properly prepare you to begin this new role as a CASA.

WHY BE A CASA VOLUNTEER?

Every child deserves a voice, a champion, and a chance at a brighter future. As a CASA you become that voice for a child, someone to stand by them, fight for their needs, and ensure they are heard. CASA volunteers form a one-on-one connection with a child, offering stability, hope, and advocacy in a time of uncertainty. If you have heart for children and a commitment to making a difference. By becoming a CASA, you have the power to make a difference.

What Our Volunteers Have to Say

“I first heard about CASA  20 years ago and thought it was an amazing organization that I wanted to explore when my kids were older.  Instead, my family became directly involved in foster care for several years and we eventually (after 4 years) adopted our daughter from foster care.  We requested a CASA be assigned for our daughter because we felt that important things were being overlooked that were important to her well-being.  With the help of the CASA, the court and GAL became aware of some of these things, we feel the CASA worker was instrumental in our daughter's case and made her young voice heard.  After the adoption was final, we decided to step back from fostering, but I still very much wanted to help foster children, so I decided to be a CASA myself.

I have only had one CASA case, for almost 2 years now, and I have really enjoyed the experience.  I love working with the children and I hope that I am making a difference in their lives.  The social workers are very busy and in my opinion overworked, but I can focus on these kids and speak out for them and their best interests in court and outside of court.  With the amazing support of the CASA supervisors I feel we have been able to work with the GAL and social workers outside of court to do the best thing for the boys.  I feel that every child in foster care deserves to have a CASA who can speak out for them.  These children did not ask to be in the position they are in and unfortunately are heard from the least.”
